STEPS
1 - Press Delegates
The press, like committees, have both staff members who will lead at the conference and delegates who participate. Rather than participating in debate, press delegates spend the conference documenting the proceedings of all committees through photography, videography and journalism. There are four press delegate positions, journalist, graphic designer, photographer and videographer. Press delegates get a unique ‘behind the scenes’ look at the conference by moving in and out of committees and working behind the scenes. The application below provides more detail on the positions and their roles at the conference, along with allowing our Press staff to collect writing samples and portfolios. The application deadline is Sunday, August 20th. Press delegates still pay the delegate fee, but unlike past years they are NOT required to stay in the hotel.
2 - Explore Your Options
ALTMUN offers 12 committees that model that of the real United Nations. Our 9 standard committees are DISEC, ECOFIN, Legal, SOCHUM, UNEP, UNODC and WHO with our three 2026 Ad hoc committees (temporary) as ITU, UNOOSA and UNDRR. Our two advanced committees are SecCo and ICJ. We also have a 13th body that is not a committee but a journalistic team, the Press. Read through the following blocks to learn a bit more about the alternative options of Press, SecCo and ICJ. If you want to receive our regular emails regarding the steps your club needs to be taking for registration, sign up to receive our emails.
3 - Delegate Registration (NEW SYSTEM)
Delegate registration is more important than ever this year. Due to space limitations at The Chattanoogan, the High School Conference will have a firm cap on the total number of delegates who can attend. This year, you must register BEFORE your advisor can claim a country/committee spot for you. You will not select your country or committee during registration. Once committees are full, we unfortunately cannot guarantee spots for additional delegates.
Register as soon as you receive your link! Your advisor will send you a registration link through MUN Manager to complete with a parent or guardian. Because spots are limited, delaying your registration could mean losing your opportunity to attend this year’s conference. Your advisor cannot claim a committee spot for you until your registration is complete.
4 - Pick a Committee
To make an informed decision be sure to read through the topics that were selected for each committee. Visit our 2026 committee page, to read all the topic blurbs. Be ready to tell your club advisor which committee and country you would like to represent by early September. Depending on your school’s size you might not get your first pick so be ready to share a list of preferences. Don’t forget to complete your delegate registration ASAP.
5 - Countries
Talk with your fellow club delegates about what countries you are interested in. Make sure you know which ones are Security Council countries as they require a special registration step. The permanent five SecCo Countries, also known as ‘P5’ are China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States. Report your interests to your advisor by Sept 2nd and bring a list of your top 12 country choices. Your advisor should handle these steps, but so you know, SecCo and ICJ requests are due Sep. 5th, standard country selection occurs in a first come first serve process through MUN Manager on Wed. Sep. 9th at 6 pm est.
6 - Security Council (SecCo)
Advanced committees are only open to delegates who have attended ALTMUN HS at least once before.
The Security Council is an advanced committee at ALTMUN. This specialized committee has 5 permanent members (China, France, Russia, UK and USA) and 10 that rotate, click HERE to see what countries are currently in SecCo for both the real United Nations and at ALTMUN. To learn more about Security Council click on the UN link below. SecCo Country Requests and Assignments occur through your advisor before regular country registration. If you have interest in being in the Security Council make sure to tell your advisor early on and BEFORE the deadline of Friday Sep. 5th. Assignments will be distributed by Sep. 8th. SecCo delegates are not required to stay at the hotel.
7 - International Court of Justice (ICJ)
Advanced committees are only open to delegates who have attended ALTMUN HS at least once before.
The International Court of Justice is an advanced ALTMUN committee that aims to focus on the pressing international legal disputes between member states. Rather than representing countries, ICJ delegates represent one of the current ICJ Judges, who operate in the same fashion as in real life; giving their expert opinions on contentious legal issues and the geopolitical stability of the globe. The ICJ will navigate through the dispute between member states to apply international law in the world’s highest court. Registration for ICJ also occurs through your advisor before regular country registration. So if you have interest in ICJ be sure to tell your advisor early and BEFORE the deadline of Friday Sep. 5th. Assignments will be distributed by Sep. 8th. To learn more about how we assign these judges please preview the form at the second link below.
8 - Committee Assignments (NEW SYSTEM)
Now that your school has received its countries, your advisor can begin assigning delegates to country and committee positions. If you are already registered in MUN Manager, you’re ready for your advisor to claim a spot for you!
If you have not registered yet, now is the time to do so. Your advisor cannot claim a committee seat for you until your registration is complete. Each committee has a limited number of spots, so the longer you wait, the greater the chance that your preferred committee, or even the conference itself, could fill before a spot can be secured for you.
Only advisors can select and assign country and committee positions, you will not choose their own position in MUN Manager.
9 - Read the Topic Guide
Once you have been assigned a position, read through the Topic Guide of your committee. While this document may be long and intimidating it was created to improve your understanding of the topic and set you up for success in your research. These topic guides were created by the current high school staff that will chair the committees at ALTMUN this year. Please take the time to utilize this resource, your Chair put a lot of effort into it. ♡
10 - Research Your Country
Now that you have been assigned a country and committee, use what you learned in the topic guide to start your research. Learn your country’s position on each topic.
11 - Documents and Awards
Delegates must turn in all four papers, two Position Papers and two Resolutions to be eligible for awards. Click HERE to learn more about the awards offered at ALTMUN. There is specific criteria for each individual and delegation award. All awards will be announced at the closing ceremony of each ALTMUN HS conference.
12 - Write Your Position Papers
With the research you have completed, write a position paper (pp) on each of your committees topics. Don’t forget to reference our Position Paper Guide.
13 - Write Your Resolutions
Now you understand the topics and your countries position. Next write a resolution (reso) for each topic, that outlines a potential way to address the issues at hand. Take a look at our Resolution Writing Guide for more instructions.
14 - Document Upload
You should have four documents, two position papers and two resolutions. need to be combined into one file. You must follow the guidelines laid out in the document guide below. Once you have your finalized files send it to your advisor ASAP. They must be uploaded on MUN Manager by Monday, October 21st.
15 - Read the Extra Tips!
The next section of this guide has a lot of helpful information like our Parli Pro Guide. Take a minute to look through so you can be better prepared for the conference this fall!
EXTRA TIPS
Staying at the Conference Hotel
While staying at the Chattanoogan hotel is not required, it is highly recommended! Staying at the hotel offers a unique delegate experience through our after hour offerings. In the evening of the first day we offer a pre-conference mock debate, a great way to warm up your parli pro in a casual (non WBA) environment. While staying at the hotel, not only will the students be living immersed in our MUN bubble, but they will be able to collaborate with their peers through our late night working room. We tend to have 50-75 delegates spending their evening hours together working on joint resolutions they presented the following day. Another after hours activity is our lively delegate social, from trivia to karaoke to board games and more, any delegate can find a place to have fun and connect with new friends. ALTMUN has reserved a block of rooms for our schools with a fixed rate of $169 per night. If you are interested in staying in the hotel talk to your advisors before the booking deadline of Wednesday, September 30th.
Create a Research Binder
We suggest printing out the research you find and collecting it in a binder. This will be a resource to you, not only in the writing process but for reference in committee as well. We also suggest adding a printed copy of the your own papers and the docket to your binder.
Check the Docket
Our Chairs will select a few submitted resolutions to comprise the docket. Resolutions in the docket will be the first to be debated in committee. Make sure you check the docket, you could be on it! (Dockets posted at least 5 days before the conference.)
Write an Opening Speech
Whether you made the docket or not you should plan to put your self on the speakers list at the beginning of committee. This is your chance to inform the rest of the delegates of your countries position and what you would support in a resolution.
Practice Parli Pro
Parliamentary Procedure is the set of rules that provide structure during debate. Take some time to review our Parli Pro Guide. If possible, organize mock debates in your clubs to practice these skills!
Don't Forget WBA
The dress code at ALTMUN is Western Business Attire (WBA). The following garments fall outside of WBA and should NOT be worn: strapless, spaghetti strap, or deep cut shirts, jeans, gym shoes, shorts, mini skirts or mini dresses. WBA for guys is typically at least slacks, a button down and a sports coat. WBA for girls can be less clear, so take a look at the guide below.
Consider a Staff Position
Do you know who makes the content for the conference? Each year its a new group of high school students who love Model UN just like you! We have a variety of staff positions, from the head Secretariat, to the Media Team and the Chairs. There is bound to be a position that can both excite and challenge you.
